On The Road in America

In 2013 we drove from Connecticut out to Davenport, Iowa and then back. It was a wonderful trip through some of the Midwest. I took a lot of pictures of our journey on the road and I am going to share just a few.

Ronald Reagan's Childhood Home

Dixon, Illinois is where Ronald Reagan called home. He spent his formative years here. Not only did he remember his time here fondly, he returned and visited his former home and he and Nancy and his brother ate a meal at the very dining room table in the picture. It is well worth driving a little out of your way to visit. We very much enjoyed our stop here.

Historic district of Winston Salem, NC

In 2010 we took a vacation to North Carolina. We began our journey in Winston Salem. These pictures were taken in February and are in the older part of the city. While it is not a pedestrian zone, it feels like it is.

We stayed in the area at the lovely Augustus T. Zevely Inn and these pictures were our adventures as we walked out and looked around the day we arrived.

This is the historic district and was originally settled by Moravians from Pennsylvania. If you have ever been to Bethlehelm, Penn. you will feel right at home here.

In the Garden at Bayou Bend in Houston

Bayou Bend was the home of Ima Hogg. Yes her father and mother had a cruel sense of humor. You visit the house on a guided tour but you are allowed to wander through the gardens at will before or after your tour. As you can see, all this wandering just became too much for Al, he needed a little down time!!

Silver at RISD in Providence

I have always loved silver and the collection at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) is quite impressive. The Gorham Manufacturing Company collection of silver pieces and design drawings from the mid-19th through the mid-20th century is the cornerstone of the American silver collection at RISD.

Church of St Mary and All Saints Chesterfield

The church of St Mary and All Saints in Chesterfield, Derbyshire is the largest church in the county. It is known for its twisted spire.

The reason that the spire is crooked may have to do with the amount of green wood that was used in its construction in addition to the weight of the tiles.

It is quite an impressive sight and certainly makes for an interesting picture.
